HACKNEY CARRIAGE DRIVERS

The Worshipful Company of Hackney Carriage Drivers is a modern City of London Livery Company that acts as the civic guild for London’s professional black taxi trade.

While its origins are traced back to 1654 with the establishment of the Fellowship of Master Hackney Coachmen, it was formally recognised by the City of London in 1990 and granted livery in February 2004, becoming the 104th Livery Company. The company received its Royal Charter in 2013.

With a membership comprising licensed taxi drivers who have passed the rigorous "Knowledge of London" test, alongside professionals in supporting services, the company promotes high standards, professionalism, and the preservation of the unique black cab trade. Its motto is Cum Scientia Servimus

 ("With Knowledge We Serve")

The Company has three main aims: Fellowship, Charity, and Education.

Fellowship: Providing a network for drivers to meet, share experiences, and support the trade.

Charity: The Worshipful Company of Hackney Carriage Drivers Charity (registered number 1172474) supports its members in times of hardship and engages in public service, such as supporting the Lord Mayor’s charities and promoting road safety.

Education: The Company runs the "Cab Guide Course," training cabbies to act as official guides to London, highlighting the historic, cultural, and educational value of London's black cabbies.

A major charitable initiative is the annual Magical Taxi Tour to Disneyland Paris, which takes children with life-threatening illnesses on a special trip.

The Company is actively involved in the life of the City of London, participating in the Lord Mayor’s Show and supporting educational initiatives such as affiliation with the Royal Docks Academy. It serves as a vital link between the traditional City institutions and the modern, increasingly electric taxi trade, ensuring that London’s taxis remain a safe, accessible, and iconic part of the capital.
